Do you have to go live on Whatnot?

No. You can sell on Whatnot without going live when a Buy It Now listing sits in your Profile Shop. Auctions and giveaways still happen in a show. Selling only through Marketplace, with no live access, is a limited beta.

A listing sits in one of two places

Whatnot’s listing help describes two storefronts. The Profile Shop is on your profile. Buyers can purchase Buy It Now there at any time. Whatnot also calls sales outside a show Marketplace listings. The Live Shop belongs to one show. Buyers see what you assigned to that show.

Where a listing appears depends on the format, and on whether you reserve it for a live show. This is the table from Whatnot’s create-a-listing article:

Where a Whatnot listing is offered, from Whatnot’s listing help. Checked November 1, 2026.
FormatProfile ShopLive Shop
Buy It NowYes, by defaultNo
Buy It Now, with Reserve for LiveNoYes
AuctionNoYes, by default
GiveawayNoYes, by default

Whatnot’s tip, if you want the same item in the shop and in a show: create it without Reserve for Live, then import it into the show. A listing created from a show’s Live Shop is reserved for that show. Reserve for Live does not copy the unit. It moves the offer out of the Profile Shop.

Whatnot’s Marketplace 101 also says one listing can be in the live store and on the marketplace at the same time. If it sells in either place, Whatnot removes it from the other. A quantity above one counts down. That protection stays inside Whatnot. It does not reach an eBay listing.

What still requires a show

An auction is bids during a live show. You set the starting bid and how long the auction runs. A giveaway also runs during a show. Whatnot selects a winner, and you cover shipping.

So “is Whatnot only live auctions?” No. Buy It Now is a fixed price. “Is Whatnot only live shows?” No. The Profile Shop can sell while you are offline. “Is Whatnot only live?” No, with the same caveat: your account has to be allowed to sell that way.

Live is still how a lot of buyers meet a seller. Whatnot’s help says buyers can find Marketplace listings on the Shop tab of your profile, in your live store’s Buy It Now section, on the Marketplace tab, and in search. It does not describe the shop as a substitute for a show. Treat the shop as the place inventory can sit, and the show as the place a lineup gets a room.

How long can you sell without going live?

Whatnot’s marketplace seller FAQ does not publish a maximum number of days you can sell only through the shop. There is no line that says a Buy It Now listing expires after a week, or that you must stream once a month to keep it.

The limit it does spell out is operational. Once a Marketplace listing sells, you are expected to ship within two business days. If you will be away from the inventory, turn on vacation mode from the profile menu in the app, and turn it off when you are back. That is the published way to stop people buying something you cannot ship.

Fees do not change because the sale was quiet. Whatnot’s marketplace FAQ says the sales fees for Marketplace listings are the same as its other selling fees. Commission still depends on category and on your four-week tier. The numbers are in what Whatnot charges sellers. For a marketplace sale, Whatnot’s fee help says the commission category follows the product. For a live sale, it follows the category of the show.

Marketplace-only access is not the default door

Having Marketplace access means you can create Buy It Now listings that stay available. If you already have live sales access, Whatnot says you automatically have Marketplace access too.

The other direction is narrower. Whatnot’s FAQ says the Marketplace-only option, selling with no live access, is in beta with a small number of users. If you do not have it and you want to sell now, the help center’s recommendation is to apply as a live seller. After live access is granted, you can sell in a show, in the shop, or both.

If you are already Marketplace-only and want to go live, the same FAQ gives two paths. Apply, and Whatnot may approve you. Or qualify from shop sales: more than $750 and 25 orders. Either way, you still have to attend an onboarding session before the first live show. Those thresholds are Whatnot’s, and they can change. Read the FAQ before you plan a month around them.

The shop question is an inventory question

Once access is sorted, “can I sell without going live?” becomes “where is this unit allowed to sell?”

The double-sell that Whatnot does not catch is the one outside Whatnot. A pair in Friday’s show can still be listed on eBay. Selling on Whatnot and eBay is that count. Where the inventory came from does not change it.

nothub is being built so products, a show lineup, and orders sit in one workspace. That product is not live. These pages do not turn on a connection to your Whatnot shop, and the pilot application does not grant one.

Listing rules move. Before you rely on a format, check creating listings and the marketplace seller FAQ. nothub is not affiliated with Whatnot.

Questions sellers ask

Do you have to go live on Whatnot?+

No. A Buy It Now listing can sell from your Profile Shop without a live show, if your account has Marketplace access. Auctions and giveaways run inside a show. Marketplace-only access, with no live selling, is a limited beta. Whatnot’s help center says that if you do not have it, apply as a live seller. Live access includes the shop.

Is Whatnot only live shows or only auctions?+

No. Buy It Now is a fixed price, and by default it appears in your Profile Shop, which Whatnot also calls Marketplace. Turning on Reserve for Live moves that listing into a show instead. Auctions and giveaways are live formats.

Whatnot’s marketplace help does not publish a maximum number of days. The limit it does spell out is shipping: after a Marketplace listing sells, you are expected to ship within two business days. Vacation mode is how you pause the shop when you cannot ship.

Shop, show, then the orders.

nothub is an independent workspace in development for Whatnot sellers. The homepage is a preview of that shop, not a login. Applying for the pilot does not open Marketplace access. That access is Whatnot’s.
